There are certain customs regulations that you should be aware of when exporting products from Denmark to other countries. It is important that you understand these rules so that you can ensure that your shipment is processed correctly and without problems. To make the process easier for you, we have an overview of rules for customs exports from Denmark and customs exports from the EU.

Get a handle on customs regulations when you export from Denmark

The customs rules depend on whether the goods are produced in Denmark or imported from another country, as well as whether the goods are intended to be sold in the country in question or forwarded to a third country.

You usually have to pay duty and VAT on an item if:

  • It is produced in Denmark and must be sold in the country in question.
  • It is imported from another country and must be sold in that country.

You usually do not have to pay duty and VAT on an item if:

  • It is produced in Denmark and must be forwarded to a third country. However, this only applies if the product is not modified or resold in the country in question.

Export to countries without a free trade agreement

If you export products from Denmark to a country that has not entered into a free trade agreement with Denmark, the customs duty may be higher than to countries that have a free trade agreement with Denmark. This is because there are no agreements on how low customs duties should be on certain goods. Therefore, the general customs rates apply, which may be higher than the rates on goods exported to countries with a free trade agreement.

It is therefore important that you investigate the applicable customs duties for the goods you wish to export to a country without a free trade agreement. You can find these rates at toldregler.dk, which is a website run by Skat.

In addition, you must also be aware that there may be other customs and VAT rules that apply to exports to countries without a free trade agreement. This may, for example, include requirements for import licenses or other documents that must be presented when importing goods.

Can you get a discount?

There may be certain situations where you can get a discount on your goods. This applies, for example, if you export goods to be used in food production, the pharmaceutical industry or research and development. In addition, you can also get a discount if you export goods that must be used to protect the environment.

In order to get a reduced amount, you must apply for an exemption from tax at the Tax Office. You can do this via "TastSelv Erhverv", which is a digital self-service solution for businesses. You can also get help applying for a written dispensation from ColliCare. We are happy to advise you throughout the entire process.
